When browsing through various reggae songs on a lazy sunday morning whilst watching ‘Scrap Heap Challenge’ I stopped and clicked on this fella for two reasons.
1. If you remember a while back we got Parly B to get down to one of our events and like so many people in the reggae scene he was just such a genuine guy, this has since been backed up by Red Eye Hi-Fi who mentioned, during a 5am post-gig ‘brew an biff’ stop that many ragga MC’s they meet feel they have a persona that they must embrace whenever they are doing a gig. But not our Parly B, who will happily sip water through the night so he can give his drunken pals (Danny T & Tradesman) a lift home.
2. On the genre-label it states that this song is’digital reggae’ and I wandered what this meant…
Did it mean that this song contained an electronic twist, or as the cover photo suggests was it produced using more modern age producing techniques than ‘Riddim Tuffa’ is used to due to the collab with 7FT soundsystem’ ?
As a producer myself i presumed that most songs nowadays were produced digitally. But then I remembered what I had once been told about the way ‘Lee Perry’ uses physical equipment to produce, dancing around his studio swapping wires and twisting various knobs and began thinking this the way that most reggae is still produced. Is that why amongst so many other evolving genres Reggae has retained its organic and original sound?!
After listening to the song either reason could be the right one. The song does sound whole, full and definitely home-grown and yet sounds electronic and sharp. The backing warbling synth sounds extremely engineered and the off beat stabs sound heavily laden with various effects, the song even contains shuffled 808 snare licks, BUT it works!
The MC’s top it off to perfection and no-one could deny that this is a classic reggae tune right here. This is out on digital and limited 500 vinyl presses today, I know ill be grabbing myself a wax copy. It may be a day late but its worth the wait grab it digitally from Bombaada records Here. Details on vinyl coming soon…
